February 2016 Newsletter

February is a lot of things…African American History Month. International Friendship Month. Super Bowl month! Potato Lovers Month??

Okay, Internet, whatever you say.

This month PATHWAYS is highlighting the people and projects that make New Pathways a place where youth can shine and reach their full potential!

Kahryn Nix is the co-founder of Driver and Nix, a local firm specializing in court reporting services. Kahryn’s been part of the New Pathways family for more than 20 years.

Kahryn Nix has seen it all.

Introduced to New Pathways for Youth in the mid 1990’s, Kahryn soon joined our board and was instrumental in keeping our doors open during the early years and the dream of life’s full potential alive for thousands of Valley youth.

It’s through this close bond that Kahryn was inspired to put New Pathways in her will and become a Legacy Giver.

“I chose to make a Legacy Gift and I encourage others to do the same because I want to see our work and our dedication to the community continue beyond us. Because what we’re doing is bigger than us.”

Having such a significant impact on her surrounding community has been incredibly rewarding for Kahryn. But she’ll be the first to tell you it wasn’t always easy.

“In 1998 our amazing executive director, Mitch Akin, had to leave New Pathways for Youth when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We were leaderless after that and struggled to find a replacement.” Mitch’s departure left a big void and there were times when Kahryn and the rest of the board weren’t sure how the future would play out for New Pathways.

But the entire New Pathways family worked together to persevere.

“We learned from experience, raised money and soon were able to put on new and many more programs.”

The strength of New Pathways and our transformative mentoring program today is thanks, in large part, to Kahryn and those like her who dedicate so much of their lives and livelihood to ensuring better outcomes for our at-risk youth.

And through our Legacy Giving program, you can enrich the lives of our youth for years to come.

New Pathways for Youth accepts legacy gifts and planned gifts through bequests and wills. By making a Legacy Gift you too can ensure New Pathways’ doors are always open, transforming the future of our community for years to come!

Every month there’s lots to do down at the New Pathways for Youth community center. We have an amazing group of volunteers but we always have room for more.

Help us fill our volunteer gap at any one of these upcoming activities and projects! Get in touch with our Volunteer Coordinator for more information.

It’s no secret, MENTORING WORKS!

Young adults who have had a mentor are 76% more likely to enroll in post-secondary education than those who lacked support.

Get in touch with our mentor recruitment team and start transforming your community today!

It may surprise you to find out that more than 70% of New Pathways support comes in the form of individual contributions from people like you who love what we do for the community and care about our youth.

Thanks to the generosity of those around us, New Pathways for Youth is stronger than ever and we’re taking big steps to ensure things stay this way!

In March, New Pathways will officially launch our middle giving society—Pathfinders Club.

You may not yet realize how far a relatively small contribution can go at New Pathways for Youth. As little as $200 per year [that’s only $17 per month!] gets you into the Club and makes a huge difference in the lives of our youth!

Individual donations up to $200 and family donations up to $400 qualify you to receive a dollar-for-dollar tax refund.
