Did you know that 75% of people are afraid of public speaking? As Jerry Seinfeld once quipped, “This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.” However, the youth who will be speaking at our Annual Breakfast this month are not afraid!
For the last seven months these youth and mentors have been part of our Speakers Program. In this program, these matches have been learning about how to create impact and share themselves through telling their story, whether the audience is 5 people or 500 people. And now they are ready to share with you! More than statistics, these youths’ lives are being impacted and transformed.
These are the types of opportunities that are made available to the youth at New Pathways. Maybe not speaking at the breakfast specifically, but opportunities to step out of one’s comfort zone, opportunities to practice succeeding and failing in a safe space, and opportunities to know that the limiting thoughts that have run one’s life up until now, don’t have to run it anymore. Our youth are then empowered and encouraged to take what they learn here out into their lives and change the trajectory of their families, selves, and community.
You can support these youth by hosting a gathering of friends, coworkers, or family at work or in your living room! Invite them to share their story and encourage others you know to become a mentor, helping other youth find their voice, just as the youth in the Speakers Program have. Please call Mary Beth Gregory at (602) 258-1012 to learn how.
What’s missing from this picture? That’s right, YOU! Currently we have 35 youth ready to begin their transformational journey at New Pathways for Youth and we need 25 mentors to be ready to launch. Each youth in our program request to be in our program, no one can mandate their participation. The youth have said they that are ready for a different pathway. They now need you to step up and join their journey. Will you be the one?
Join us for a Mentor Introduction Session to close the gap for these youth! Introduction sessions are held on Tuesday evenings at 6:15 p.m. and on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at 1001 East Pierce Street, Phoenix.
It all began with a dream…and a bench. Several years ago the Support Sky Harbor Coalition, founded to support the operational enhancements and vital services of Sky Harbor Airport, wanted to give back to the community in a larger way. They chose to partner with New Pathways for Youth and at their annual appreciation dinner, they auctioned off a bench decorated by our youth.
That first auction began a long partnership of giving back and contributing to our transformative mentoring program. Today, the Coalition still auctions our youths’ artwork but now that art is put on display at Sky Harbor Airport for travelers and visitors to enjoy. Check it out in the baggage claim!
This past fall, the Coalition auctioned Dream Wings at their annual dinner, raising over $150,000 to benefit our transformative mentoring program. We are grateful for each member’s contribution and celebrate the top contributors, including:
- Hensel Phelps Construction
- McCarthy Kiewit
- Coleman Dahm & Associates
- Lea + Elliott, Inc.
- DPR Construction
- Gregory E Torrez
- HMS Host
- Hudson Group
- John Williams
- Rosendin Electric
- Suntec Concrete
The Support Sky Harbor Coalition is proud of their long-term commitment to New Pathways for Youth. If you are still wondering how you can get involved, the Support Sky Harbor Coalition recommends, “If you’re interested in seeing how a long-term commitment can make a difference, sign up to be a mentor or call New Pathways to find out how to get involved. Every relationship has a beginning; just start and figure it out as you go.” Thank you Support Sky Harbor Coalition for transforming lives!
